In our General Manager series, we meet up with heads of hotels for private stories and insider perspective. This week, we get to know Marcel Thoma of The Upper House in Hong Kong.
Best hotel room on the property:
All of our rooms are simply divine with unobstructed views over Hong Kong Island or the famous Victoria Harbor. Suite 4802 is my absolute favourite for its location close to the gym; closet space, the most important of all suites; and, views over Hong Kong Island, Pacific Place, the Bank of China building and Victoria Harbor.
The hotel’s most fascinating detail, service or historical tidbit:
We provide complimentary short rides to guests in our own limousines. This is useful in a busy city like Hong Kong. Our guests can literally reach any point in Hong Kong simply within 15 minutes without loosing precious time.
Favourite drink on the nearest bar:
I love the Strangle Parrot at The Continental. It’s a drink mixed with gin, lime and basil.
Favourite dish on the nearest restaurant:
The roast pork at Duddell’s is to die for.
The neighborhood shop or boutique you love:
The Monocle store at St. Francis yard. I love their special edition of the Comme des Garçons perfumes.
Best touristy activity or outing to do in your city:
Hands down, The Peak. From there once can see that Hong Kong isn’t only all about skyscrapers, it has a lot greenery to supply.
Best non-touristy activity or outing to do in your city:
Shopping Causeway Bay. Everyone goes there and there are such a lot of fascinating outlets to discover.
Outside the lobby, what’s your hobby?
Swimming at certainly one of Hong Kong’s divine beaches.
Your last vacation destination:
The PuLi in Shanghai. The only Zen place in Shanghai and surrounded by a lot of fascinating nighttime spots.
Your next vacation destination, planned or wished:
One&Only resort within the Maldives for a wedding of a guest. What else can one wish for?
